My little tradition

This Thanksgiving video gets me every year. It's my little tradition to watch it around Thanksgiving time and just remember all of the little and big things I'm thankful for.

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful, but also a time to serve.
It also marks the beginning of a wonderful holiday season! Think about it... In November we focus on gratitude. December we focus on Christ's birth (and soo much more!). January we self-reflect and set goals for the future. We try to better ourselves and become more Christlike. February is all about love. I like to think of it more as loving one another, loving our neighbors, friends, and family.

In all of those things, I'm reminded to serve. I'm reminded of the selfless life Jesus Christ led, and all that he did for others. I'm inspired to notice peoples needs and do what I can to fill them. I want to try a little harder, to be a little better!

So lets remember those things this holiday season, it's just barely getting started. It still has months to go and we need to serve each other continually. It brings happiness to everyone, yourself included.

What are your Thanksgiving traditions?

#161forlife

My coworkers and I have a few loves in this world. (in no particular order...)
1. Food, especially chocolate and candy and ice cream (especially especially when it's free)
2. The gospel of Christ
3. Our jobs at good ol' BYU Conferences and Workshops
4. Instagram
...I'm sure there are a lot more but that sounds about good to me.

And thus... #161forlife was born. We just had to share our love for food, each other, and our jobs with the world and scream it from the mountain tops that "we have the best job evaaaaaa!" and that "our bosses love us more than your bosses do!!!" (both real things I've put on insta, #noshame).

(And seriously, I swear 90% of the things I Instagram about are work, directed towards people at work, or work jokes... #ihavenolife #jkjk #butreally...)

3 REASONS WHY WE LOVE BYU CONFERENCES & WORKSHOPS OFFICE 161:

  1. We decorate each other's desks in the best way possible for birthdays. Grumpy cat birthday memes, dream vacation destinations, and all the confetti you could ever want included. #bejealous
  2. Our office meetings always include ice cream. And if you work the next morning, then you can eat more and more of it. (Fact: Ice cream makes the best breakfast. College eating habits for the win!)
  3. And sometimes my boss makes an "Elf Yourself" video of me and my coworkers celebrating Christmas in true Texan style. Wanna check it out for yourself? I knew it. Here y'all go. Enjoy about two minutes of awesome elf-country dancing. (I'm the one with sunglasses in case you couldn't tell.)

Merry (very early) Christmas Y'all! xoxo C&W 161

P.S. In case you are worried about me and my hashtagging habits: Yes, I am aware that hashtags don't work on blogger. I've got one thing to say about it... #longhairdontcare :)

Happy happy happy

How y'all feeling today? But seriously, I hope y'all are happy happy happy! Just like my good friend Phil Robertson says...

Today I am happy happy happy. Wanna know why? Good, I'm going to tell you! (If you don't what to know...then that's all cool, just close this and be happy happy happy because you saw that awesome 14 second video.) I'm happy because today I felt my Savior's love! I felt it soo much and it was amazing. I have been focusing on feeling His love for me each day and recognizing it more. And it's been awesome. It makes me happy happy happy! (Okay, I've gotta stop saying that...)

But in all seriousness, I am so happy. I know that my Savior loves me! He loves each of us. How can you not be happy when you know that? I haven't been all that happy lately, but I had to relearn and remember that the Lord knows who I am and that I am a daughter of God and that he loves me. And now I just want to sing this song all the day long:
I feel my Savior's love
In all the world around me.
His Spirit warms my soul
Through ev'rything I see.
I feel my Savior's love;
Its gentleness enfolds me...
I feel my Savior's love
And know that he will bless me...
I'll share my Savior's love
By serving others freely.
Each day I can reflect and notice things that show how the Savior loves me. Today I was able to feel that love and it made today best! I am so grateful that I am able to feel my Savior's love.

But I think there is so much more to being grateful than just saying thanks. By showing that we're grateful for things and actually doing something to help others, we get so much more out of life. We can show our gratitude to the Savior through our actions and through serving others.

I'm going to try more to serve those around me and become more aware of their needs. I'm not always the best at that (hello, I'm a 20 year old college student who pretty much focuses on herself like 99% of the time), but it's something I can work on!

Soooo if you have any awesome ways you have helped people around you, even little things, let me know. I would love to hear your stories. They're inspiring :)

If you want some awesome service quotes, videos, etc...check out my work's Facebook page. I help plan BYU Women's Conference and this month we've been focusing on service. It's been just what I needed!

Happy lists

This weekend was a great weekend. I learned about happy lists. Happy lists are lists of things that make you happy, things you're grateful for, etc. It's a way to focus of the positive in life.

I've been trying to make happy lists all my life, without even knowing it! And I think November is a great time to make a happy list (ya know...gratitude, Thanksgiving and all!). It helps to put things in perspective for me. It reminds me of what is truly important. And it makes me remember all of the wonderful blessings I have in my life.

Tender mercies are at the top of my happy list. They remind me that the Lord knows what I am going through. I have really worked to recognize the little things that help me feel my Heavenly Father's love each day. Tender mercies are those little things that give me a way I can remember the Lord and remember that he knows who I am.

"The Lord's tender mercies are the very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving-kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ." -David A. Bednar

Elder Bednar's talk "The Tender Mercies of the Lord" teaches us to invite and recognize the Lord's tender mercies in our lives. There are daily blessings in our lives. The Lord wants us to know each day that he knows what we are going through. He truly understands it, and more so than any other person.

Purpose

When I started this blog I wanted it to be adorable. I wanted it to have a zillion followers, I wanted recipes on it, I wanted fashion on it, I wanted crafts on it, and lets be honest...I wanted to be pinned. I tried that out for a while. I made desserts, I took pictures of outfits, and I made crafts. Since then I have realized that's not really what I want this blog to be.

Don't get me wrong, I love baking. For realz...it's one of those things I do for me. I do it to relax and I genuinely enjoy it. But I don't bake that often, especially up at school. And I realized that I don't love to dress up or at least taking pictures of it for a blog. I felt like I was trying too hard. And finally, while yes I sure do like crafting and sewing, it's another thing that I don't really loove to do. It's not something that if I have 30 minutes I'm going to go sew a skirt. (I would probably just end up watching Netflix if I'm being honest here...) Yes those are thing I enjoy doing, but those aren't things I want to blog about. I'm not that passionate about those things.

Do I really know what this blog is exactly? No. It's just some thoughts for me. It's a place for me to record and remember things. It's a place for me to share quotes that I love with people I love. We'll see what this ends up being. And that is okay. It's an adventure. It's a journey.

It's changed soo much over the almost 3 years I've had it. And is it going to continue to change? Yes! And that's okay. I have spent hours thinking up different blog names and designs for this silly thing throughout the years. And just now am I realizing that I love the name I decided on. I was reminded to keep looking up. I remembered the wisdom and comfort I gained from reading the talk "It Is Better to Look Up" by Carl B. Cook. I always feel empowered from that talk.

I challenge you to read the talk and set a goal for yourself to keep looking up.

A rule for myself: try

Life is full of ups and downs. Some days are going to be better than others. That's the "nature of the beast." But we are able to determine our attitudes about things. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the crying session every once in a while, despite my hatred for crying. Sometimes you just need to. But overall, I think it is so important for me to choose to have a good attitude.

That is something my parents always told me. If I was having a bad time at an activity or something, they directed my to change my attitude. Nobody could make me have a bad time. Or like when I would fight with my brother, I would say "he makes me so mad!" But the truth is, he wasn't making me mad. I let what he ias doing bother me. It's up to me to decide how I feel.

I love this quote. Because, let's be honest, we all want to give up sometimes. We stop believing. We get discouraged. But we need to remember to keep trying. Be believing. Be happy. And not to get discouraged. So much easier said than done... But it is possible.

I have a rule for myself:
I can't complain about my circumstances if I'm not trying, or haven't tried to change them.

For example, if I don't have anything to do on a Friday night, I don't let myself complain about it if I haven't asked anyone to do something. That way, I'm trying to make myself happy. And chances are if you try something, anything, in one way or another it will work out. It might not turn out how you expected, but putting some effort in always brings some result.
